Throughout the city are multiple communities where people and remnants of leftovers occupy the same plot of land. “Rag-pickers,” - those who collect the garbage in their community live alongside other daily wage earners and their families. Back2Back India works with several families in one community to provide intentional programming at a community center the parents and children can walk to. The programming for children includes tutoring, building social-emotional skills, moral development, English classes, access to technology and computer classes, and other Life Skills classes. The parents participate in a parent class where they learn trauma-informed parenting skills and social-emotional skills. As staff seek to provide care for today and hope for tomorrow, they work individually with each family, identifying strengths and challenges, connecting them to services, advocating when needed, and encouraging growth and sustainability.
