Monterrey is the capital of Nuevo Leon, and the third largest city in Mexico. It is an industrial city, situated in the midst of the Sierra Madre Mountains.There is a large separation between the wealthy and poor in Monterrey, with only a small percentage of the population considered “middle class”. Unemployment rates are high, and the national minimum wage is less than five dollars a day, with many making even less than this. It is difficult to break the cycle of poverty since free public education ends after the 9th grade.
Back2Back began in Monterrey in 1997 when Beth and Todd Guckenburger moved to Monterrey to partner with local children’s homes. Monterrey is still our largest site, which hosts the most mission trip guests, works with the most children’s homes, and has the largest staff team.
